Chevrolet unveils price of 2020 midengine Corvette
The mid-engined 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will compete for North American Car of the year.

Chevrolet is taking preorders for the much-anticipated midengine Corvette and has dedicated a "concierge" team to answer customer inquiries about the sports car.

General Motors said Thursday its 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will start at $59,995. That's about $4,000 more than its 2019 Corvette, which starts at $55,900. Comparatively, the midengine Porsche 718 Cayman starts at $56,900.

“Most people thought when we moved the Corvette to midengine it would no longer be attainable, but we knew we couldn’t mess with a winning formula, and the 2020 Stingray proves it,” said Brian Sweeney, Chevrolet U.S. vice president.

The "basic" version of the car will start at $59,995; the next trim package, with features including a full-color head-up display and Bose 14-speaker sound system, will start at $67,295; and the top-level trim package, with a lot of leather in the interior, will start at $71,945, GM said.

Chevy engineers have moved the eighth-generation 'Vette’s engine from its familiar location under the hood to behind the passengers, over the rear axle.

With GM’s classic small block V8 engine, a normally aspirated 6.2-liter that produces 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, the car can go from zero to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds.

The gearhead stuff: “We’ve packed a lot of performance into the Corvette Stingray at this price when you consider an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, small block V-8 and engine-mounted dry sump oil system are all standard,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette executive chief engineer.

GM has established a Chevrolet Corvette Concierge team to answer customer questions about car, buying and ownership process. The team, which is based at GM's Detroit headquarters, can be reached at 866-424-3892 from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. EDT Monday-Friday.

GM will start building the 2020 Corvette Stingray goes at GM’s Bowling Green Assembly in late 2019.
